Former Charleston police chief, Tyke Hunt, is now facing allegations of misconduct in police headquarters. A former police officer, Chelsea McCoy, has accused Hunt of engaging in a sexual encounter with her during working hours inside the police headquarters. McCoy has filed a formal complaint with the city, leading to an investigation by the Professional Standards Division (PSD).

McCoy also alleges that Hunt falsified her polygraph results to help her during the hiring process. She revealed these allegations during an interview on the Scoop Squad podcast. McCoy expressed concerns about passing the polygraph due to her past drug use, but Hunt assured her that she would pass. Despite lying during the polygraph, McCoy was informed by Hunt that she had passed.

McCoy’s time in the police force was short-lived as she faced legal troubles after being involved in a fight at a party in St. Albans in January 2019. She was charged with battery and resigned from the Charleston Police Department (CPD). However, a year later, she rejoined the force and took a polygraph exam once again. McCoy admitted to lying on the exam but still passed.

During her second stint on the force, McCoy claims that Hunt, who had become the chief of police, showed an inappropriate interest in her. They eventually engaged in sexual relations in his office, leading to McCoy’s second resignation.

Another woman, Jenny Harless, also came forward on the Scoop Squad podcast, accusing Hunt of attempting to have sex with her in his office.

Hunt has taken responsibility for his actions and sent a memo to city council members, apologizing for misuse of city property and poor judgment. He resigned from his position as police chief on August 18, citing personal and medical reasons. However, he expressed intentions to return as a lieutenant after recovering from back surgery.

Mayor Amy Goodwin announced that Deputy Chief Scott Dempsey would serve as the interim chief of police. Councilmember Shannon Snodgrass called for a professional standards investigation into the allegations against Hunt, emphasizing the need for prompt action.

The city council had previously rejected a proposal for an external investigation into another incident involving Hunt and a woman in his city office, which resulted in a suspension and apology from the former police chief.

While the city initially claimed they had not received a formal complaint from McCoy, it has since been filed. Mayor Goodwin assured that any allegations brought to their attention would be investigated.

It is crucial to focus on providing justice and fair resolution for all parties involved in this case, ensuring that the truth is revealed and appropriate action is taken.
