An Unexpected Power Outage in New Jersey Caused by an Osprey Mishap

Sayreville, New Jersey – In a bizarre turn of events, around 2,000 residents found themselves without power for a short period due to an unlikely culprit: an osprey that inadvertently dropped a fish onto a crucial transponder. The incident, which occurred on August 12th, led to a momentary disruption in the community’s electricity supply.

According to Jersey Central Power & Light, the local utility company, the fish fell from the talons of the osprey and landed directly on the transponder in Sayreville. This caused the coils within the device to become misaligned, resulting in the power outage. While it is not uncommon for animals to occasionally cause disruptions to power lines, fish have never made the list until now.

Expressing their sympathy for the osprey, the company spokesperson added, We also send our thoughts to the osprey because if you’ve ever dropped your ice-cream cone at the fair, you know the feeling. It appears that the fish’s scales were punctured by the osprey’s talons before being unintentionally dropped onto the power lines.

Osprey populations in New Jersey were previously endangered but are now making a remarkable recovery. Last year, a survey documented 733 nesting pairs of these majestic fish-eating raptors across the state. As a result, Jersey Central Power & Light regularly inspects their equipment to ensure that ospreys haven’t nested in proximity, relocating them if necessary.

Taking a somewhat light-hearted approach, the Sayreville Police Department took to social media and shared a suspect sketch of an osprey, along with a picture of the fateful fish, humorously named Gilligan. A playful police line do not cross tape was placed in front of the fish. The department’s post read, Please let us not forget the victim in this senseless death. Gilligan was a hardworking family man and a father to thousands of children. The suspect was last seen flying south. If you see him, do not try to apprehend him. Although he isn’t believed to be armed, he may still be very dangerous.

While power outages caused by animals are not unheard of, this incident proves that nature can sometimes throw unexpected surprises in our path. As the community in Sayreville regains their electricity and resumes their daily routine, they may also be left with a newfound appreciation for the delicate balance between man and nature, even if it means temporary power outages caused by ospreys and their slippery catches.
