Ford Faces NHTSA Investigation Over Handling of Mustang Mach-E Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into Ford’s handling of a major recall for the Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles (EVs) in June 2022. The recall affected nearly 49,000 Mach-Es sold in the United States and was issued due to potential issues with the contactors on the high-voltage battery.

The recall was prompted by concerns that the contactors could overheat after DC fast charging and repeated wide open pedal events, which could result in a loss of power and increase the risk of accidents. Following the recall, Ford implemented software updates to monitor contactor temperature and reduce battery power, as well as monitor contactor resistance. In addition, the company issued a technical service bulletin to replace the high-voltage battery junction box.

However, more than a year after announcing the recall, the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has launched a recall query into 64,727 Mustang Mach-E EVs. This follows the receipt of 12 consumer complaints from owners who reported experiencing issues even after their vehicles had undergone the necessary fixes.

One owner mentioned that just two days after receiving the software update, their vehicle suffered another catastrophic failure of the high-voltage battery junction box. The incident occurred during a drive from the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles, with a Service Vehicle Soon warning appearing and power being limited to 30 percent. Fortunately, the car did not come to a halt on the road, allowing the driver and passengers to safely reach a dealership.

Another Mach-E owner in Florida recounted a similar incident. After charging at a DC fast charger, the car’s interior screen displayed a safely stop now message, forcing the vehicle to come to a complete stop within seconds on a highway on-ramp. The car eventually restarted after a three-hour wait, but only managed to travel three miles before experiencing another stoppage.

Ford spokesperson Maria Buczkowski assured Automotive News that the automaker is cooperating with NHTSA’s investigation. As the investigation unfolds, it will be crucial for Ford to address any underlying issues and provide effective solutions to ensure the safety and satisfaction of Mustang Mach-E owners.

This latest development underscores the importance of automakers diligently handling recalls and addressing safety concerns promptly. The NHTSA plays a vital role in monitoring and investigating such matters, holding manufacturers accountable for maintaining the quality and reliability of their vehicles.

As the investigation progresses, stakeholders will be closely watching for any updates on Ford’s actions and the NHTSA’s findings. With EVs gaining popularity and consumer trust being vital for their success, automakers must prioritize the safety and well-being of their customers to maintain their reputation and propel the electric vehicle industry forward.
