Japan to Begin Releasing Nuclear-Contaminated Wastewater from Fukushima Plant Despite Widespread Opposition
The Japanese government has announced its decision to release nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean, starting on Thursday. This controversial move has sparked strong opposition both at home and abroad. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made the announcement following a ministerial meeting held on Tuesday morning.
Representatives from Japan’s fishing industry reiterated their firm opposition to the ocean discharge plan during a meeting with Kishida, in hopes of gaining understanding. However, despite their concerns, the government proceeded with the decision.
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was hit by a devastating magnitude-9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11, 2011. As a result, the plant experienced core meltdowns that released radiation, leading to a level-7 nuclear accident, the highest rating on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale. Since then, the plant has been generating a significant amount of water contaminated with radioactive substances as part of the cooling process for the nuclear fuel in the reactor buildings. Currently, this wastewater is being stored in approximately 1,000 storage tanks.
In 2015, the Japanese government and the Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the plant, made an agreement with fisheries cooperative associations in Fukushima prefecture and nationwide. The agreement stated that wastewater disposal would not proceed without the understanding of relevant parties.
However, according to a recent survey conducted by the national news agency Kyodo, 88.1% of respondents expressed concerns about the government’s plan to release treated radioactive wastewater into the ocean. Moreover, the disapproval rate of Prime Minister Kishida’s cabinet rose to an eight-month high.
The decision to release the wastewater has raised concerns about the potential impact on marine life and the environment.
