Los Angeles Gears Up for Hurricane Hilary, Mayor Urges Preparedness

The city of Los Angeles is bracing itself for the arrival of Hurricane Hilary, as local officials emphasize the importance of preparedness and urge residents to stay informed and safe. With various city departments mobilized and ready to respond to any potential crisis, Los Angeles is taking proactive measures to ensure the well-being of its residents.

Mayor Karen Bass, during a news conference, stated that the city is fully prepared, drawing from past experiences with wildfires and earthquakes. Efforts are already underway around the clock to stay ahead of the storm and its potential impacts.

Hurricane Hilary, currently at Category 2 status in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja California, is forecasted to reach Los Angeles early Sunday and continue through Monday. Although it is expected to weaken to a tropical storm, heavy rain, strong winds, and high risks of flooding are still anticipated.

Mayor Bass, in a post on social media platform X, urged Angelenos to take the approaching storm seriously and provided key accounts for updates. The city has also received support from Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, who assured continuous availability during the storm, and federal aid is on standby if required.

To efficiently manage any incidents and impacts on the city, California’s Emergency Management Department will activate its Emergency Operations Center. Various city departments, including the Department of Water and Power, L.A. Sanitation, L.A. Fire Department, and Transportation Department, are taking necessary steps to keep essential services operational.

The city is also coordinating with the Los Angeles Housing Services Authority to assist the homeless population during the storm, with pre-identified shelter facilities ready for use. Animal shelters and specialized rescue teams are prepared to evacuate and provide assistance as needed.

Mayor Bass emphasized the importance of individual preparedness, urging residents to register for local alerts and follow reliable social media channels for updates. She advised residents to stay away from the shoreline and beaches throughout the duration of the storm.

In terms of safety tips and resources, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website provides valuable information on hurricane preparedness. For life-threatening emergencies, residents should call 911, and for other non-emergency situations such as flooding or fallen trees, they can request assistance through the city’s 311 service.

Residents are also urged to be patient in the event of power outages, as crews from the Department of Water and Power work to address any issues. It is crucial to stay away from fallen power lines and exercise caution.

As the city faces the approaching storm, coordination among different levels of government is paramount. Mayor Bass assured that Los Angeles is well-prepared and ready to respond to the challenges posed by Hurricane Hilary.

The looming storm has resulted in numerous cancelations throughout the Southland, with county parks, buildings, and facilities closed on Sunday and Monday. Visitors are advised to stay home and prioritize their safety during this time.

As Los Angeles remains on high alert, residents are encouraged to stay informed, stay safe, and be prepared for the potential impacts of Hurricane Hilary. By heeding the warnings and following the guidance of city officials, the community can weather the storm together.
