Man Arrested for Shooting Wife After Tracking Her with Cell Phone

A 58-year-old man was arrested by the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) for allegedly shooting his 57-year-old wife after tracking her using her cell phone. The identity of the man is being withheld to protect the victim.

The incident unfolded on Friday, August 18, when police received a call reporting gunshots in the area near 600 West and South Temple. As officers were responding to the location, another call came in reporting gunfire during a fight.

Upon arriving at the scene and securing it, law enforcement discovered that the suspect had used his wife’s cell phone to track her to the area. He is then accused of shooting another person before turning the gun on his wife. However, both the suspect and his wife had already left the location by the time the police arrived.

Quick action by a SLCPD sergeant, with the assistance of the South Salt Lake Police and Utah Highway Patrol, led to a traffic stop near 3400 South State Street, where the suspect’s car was spotted. Authorities found the man’s wife in the back seat with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, and she was subsequently transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

Without incident, the suspect was taken into custody and later booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. He is facing charges of domestic violence aggravated assault, aggravated assault, and felony discharge of a firearm.

In light of this disturbing incident, the Salt Lake City Police Department wants to remind the community about the resources available to support survivors of domestic violence in Utah. They urge anyone who has experienced such violence to call 801-799-3000 and ask for a Victim Advocate or reach out directly to the 24-hour hotline at 801-580-7969. The department emphasizes that all services are free, and individuals can receive information anonymously.

It is essential that we address the issue of domestic violence and work towards creating a safer community for everyone.
