The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson, Justice Arun Mishra, has called on citizens to take a more proactive approach towards protecting the environment. Mishra said that the theme of this year’s World Environment Day, Beat Plastic Pollution, highlights the significant threat that plastic poses to the planet. Mishra also emphasized the need for government, businesses and civil society organizations to collaborate to reduce plastic production, promote eco-friendly alternatives, and improve recycling and waste management infrastructure. Elsewhere in the statement, Mishra stressed that everyone has the right to live in a clean and safe environment. He also highlighted the adverse effects that plastic production has on the health of communities living near plastic production facilities or waste disposal sites. To combat these problems, Mishra has called for comprehensive policy decisions to check the spread of plastic and other such pollutants which endanger the environment and climate.
