Devastating Wildfire Forces Couple to Flee Home, Leaving Everything Behind
KIHEI, Maui – Tasha Anderson and Kevin Campbell experienced a harrowing ordeal as they were forced to abandon their home in Lahaina, Maui, due to a destructive wildfire. The couple, who are expecting their first child, had built a nursery in their home where they were eagerly anticipating bringing their baby home. However, when the power went out in Lahaina and smoke from the wildfire appeared, they realized the situation was more severe than previous storms or fires they had encountered.
Initially in denial, Anderson was eventually convinced by Campbell to evacuate as he witnessed the flames tearing through their neighborhood. With little time to spare, they hastily gathered a few belongings and departed, leaving behind everything they had worked for, including Anderson’s engagement and wedding rings. Driving along a side road to avoid heavy traffic, they made their way to safety on the highway.
Although Campbell later returned to survey the damage, he expressed regret and stated that he would have stayed away if given the chance again. The road was filled with melted aluminum pools, and disturbing the remains of those who did not escape was a horrifying prospect. Campbell vividly described the emotional toll of returning to their devastated neighborhood, admitting that the experience was far more challenging than he had anticipated. He sorrowfully acknowledged the likelihood of finding people’s remains while walking through the area.
Their home in the Shark Pit neighborhood of Lahaina has been reduced to ashes, and they have lost all their possessions. Fortunately, a friend of a friend has offered them a place to stay in Kihei for six months, providing a temporary respite for the couple as they prepare for the arrival of their baby.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Campbell shared his determination to start anew and rebuild their lives. While the loss of their home was devastating, he emphasized the need to find hope and embrace the opportunity to rebuild their future.
The wildfire that swept through Lahaina has caused widespread destruction and prompted a collective effort from authorities and the community to aid those affected. As Maui rebuilds and supports those who have lost everything, the couple’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of individuals facing unimaginable challenges.
