Johor, a state in Malaysia, has launched the Johor Green Deal, a green initiative framework aimed at promoting sustainability and addressing climate change issues. The announcement was made by Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi at the Asia-Pacific Climate Week (APCW) 2023, held in Johor Baru.
In his speech, Menteri Besar Onn highlighted the urgency of tackling climate change and emphasized the need for the state government to implement long-term programs to address the issue. To support this effort, Johor is collaborating with Hasni Mohammad to establish the Johor Sustainability Centre.
Former Johor menteri besar Hasni Mohammad, who is now the Johor Economic, Tourism and Cultural Office chairman, and Niclas Svenningsen, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change program coordination manager, were also present at the event.
Menteri Besar Onn expressed Johor’s willingness to share its experiences in disaster management, particularly in dealing with floods, and emphasized the importance of learning from other countries. He noted that floods are a global issue that requires collective efforts to address.
Johor recently experienced severe flooding, forcing more than 80,000 people in 10 districts to evacuate their homes. As a result, the state is keen on sharing its experiences while also seeking lessons from others.
The APCW 2023, set to take place in November at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre, is expected to bring together over 2,000 delegates from 150 countries. This event is part of a series of regional climate weeks aimed at building momentum leading up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai later that month.
Menteri Besar Onn expressed Johor’s honor and delight in hosting such a significant event and reiterated the state’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and green initiatives.
Niclas Svenningsen commended Johor for its dedication and leadership in hosting the APCW, stating that it will inspire determination in addressing climate challenges not only in the region but also globally.
