Purple Heart Recipients Honored at Ottawa County Dinner
Oak Harbor, Ohio – A heartfelt tribute was paid to eight Purple Heart recipients at the 2023 Ottawa County Purple Heart Dinner held at the American Legion Post 114 in Oak Harbor. The event, cohosted by the Ottawa County Veterans Service Office, aimed to acknowledge the sacrifice and bravery of these outstanding veterans.
The emotional gathering commenced with a delicious dinner prepared by dedicated members of the American Legion Post 114, American Legion Auxiliary Post 114, American Legion Riders Post 114, and Sons of American Legion Post 114. In attendance were Ottawa County Commissioners Donald Douglas, Mark Stahl, and Mark Coppeler, showing their unwavering support for the honored recipients.
The evening’s emcee, Chuck Beaver, a Vietnam War veteran, expressed the importance of recognizing Purple Heart recipients, who often receive minimal recognition for their extraordinary valor. These brave individuals put their lives on the line for their country and deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
Sharing their incredible stories and experiences, the Purple Heart recipients were given a platform to speak about their encounters and the lasting impact of their service. One of the recipients, William Bill Sorg, vividly recounted the tragic event that changed his life forever. While serving in Vietnam in 1970 as part of the 101 Airborne, Sorg and his comrades were ambushed, resulting in casualties and life-altering injuries. Sorg, who suffered hearing loss, emphasized the trauma he still carries, especially when the anniversary of their harrowing ordeal approaches each year.
To honor their sacrifices, each Purple Heart recipient received a certificate of appreciation, a lapel pin, and heartfelt gifts from the community. The event garnered overwhelming support from local businesses and organizations, with nearly 40 of them generously donating money and prizes.
The guest speaker for the evening, American Legion District Commander Kevin Motter, highlighted the profound impact veterans have made on his life. Following the loss of his father at a young age, veterans took him under their wing and shaped the person he became. Retiring from the Army as a lieutenant, Motter expressed his deep gratitude and sense of indebtedness to these heroes, mentioning the guilt he feels for not being able to give back enough to their community.
