United Flight’s Terrifying Plunge Sparks Miscommunication Investigation
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have concluded that a miscommunication between the captain and co-pilot was responsible for a terrifying incident involving a United flight. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii, when the flight suddenly dipped dangerously close to the ocean’s surface.
During the ascent, the captain instructed the co-pilot to reset the wing flaps, but there was a misunderstanding. While the captain intended to say five, the co-pilot mistakenly heard 15 as the measurement for the adjustment. This misinterpretation led to the plane’s nose pitching down and a sudden drop in altitude.
According to the NTSB report, the co-pilot informed federal investigators that they were aware of the captain’s difficulties with airspeed control but couldn’t determine the exact problem. The plane broke through cloud cover, and the ground proximity warning system triggered an alarm. In response, the co-pilot repeatedly urged the captain to pull up.
The Boeing 777 descended from over 2,200 feet to more than 1,400 feet towards the Pacific Ocean before recovering. There were a total of 271 passengers and 10 crew members on board during the incident.
Remarkably, following the recovery, the chief flight attendant reassured the cockpit crew that everyone was unharmed. The flight then proceeded to its destination in San Francisco.
Despite the seriousness of the event, both pilots are still employed and continue to fly with United. However, this incident has prompted the NTSB to launch an investigation to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Interestingly, on the same day as the United flight incident, a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix encountered severe turbulence while approaching Honolulu, injuring 36 people, some of whom sustained serious injuries.
