Stockton Shelter for the Homeless will continue operating under new nonprofit leadership, according to an announcement made by the city of Stockton. An agreement has been reached between the city and the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless, allowing the nonprofit shelter to be subleased to St. Mary’s Dining Room as early as next month.
St. Mary’s Dining Room, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting individuals living in poverty and experiencing homelessness since 1955, will now take over the shelter’s operations. They provide essential services such as food, showers, and healthcare support.
The agreement ensures a smooth and orderly transition, safeguarding the individuals and families currently relying on the Stockton Shelter. This move also guarantees the continuity of vital emergency shelter services for the community.
Earlier this month, the shelter had planned to close its doors, leaving approximately 250 people homeless. However, the lack of a clear explanation for the closure prompted City Manager Harry Black to declare a local emergency. This allowed the city to secure funds from various accounts and enter into contracts to assist the shelter.
Initially, finalizing the contract and operational details for St. Mary’s to take over the sublease proved to be a challenge. The shelter returned the sublease agreement to the city, redlining and highlighting sections that were deemed unacceptable. As a result, the city issued a letter instructing the shelter to vacate the premises.
However, after collaborative efforts between the city, the shelter, and St. Mary’s, an agreement was finally reached. The new agreement ensures that guests of the shelter can receive services without experiencing any relocation or disruption.
City Manager Harry Black expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, We are excited that we have been able to facilitate the assignment of the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless sublease to St. Mary’s Dining Room. Mayor Kevin Lincoln echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the agreement reflects the compassion and dedication of the entire community.
By allowing St. Mary’s Dining Room to oversee the shelter, Stockton ensures that its most vulnerable residents have access to necessary services and a roof over their heads. This collaborative effort serves as a testament to the commitment of both nonprofit organizations and the city to address homelessness and poverty within the community.
