Shark hunting and finning have once again come under scrutiny as pictures of endangered species being sold at a market in Semporna, Sabah’s east coast, have sparked calls for a total ban on these activities. Concerns have been raised by marine conservationists and diving enthusiasts regarding the open sale of devil rays, bamboo sharks, blacktip sharks, porcupine fish, blue spotted stingrays, and parrotfish at the Semporna wet market. These species are not only endangered, but their continued unrestricted sale also poses a significant threat to the delicate marine ecosystem in the area.

The worrying aspect for many is whether these sharks were caught within the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, which is renowned for its world-famous Pulau Sipadan diving haven. The diving community fears that if the sale of these endangered species continues unchecked, it could have irreversible consequences for the marine environment and jeopardize the stunning beauty of the underwater world that attracts tourists to the Semporna region.

President of the Sabah Dive Squad Club, Sim Fui, expressed his concerns about the illegal capture and trade of endangered marine species. He emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and stricter penalties to deter those involved in such activities. Sim stressed the significance of conservation efforts and sustainable tourism, stating that protecting marine life goes beyond safeguarding diving destinations; it is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of our oceans.

While it is already illegal to fish within Tun Sakaran Marine Park, there is a growing call to broaden the list of shark species protected from hunting, as well as to enhance enforcement measures to prevent fishing within the marine park. As of July 17, 2019, four shark species and two manta ray species were granted country-wide protection under Malaysian law. However, divers and conservationists believe more species need to be added to this list to ensure their survival.

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, the shortfin devil ray is listed as endangered and is rarely seen in the world’s oceans. Various shark species also face threats and are categorized as near threatened and threatened on the IUCN list.

Semporna’s underwater world plays a pivotal role in attracting tourists, thereby contributing significantly to the local economy. While these endangered species are often caught as bycatch, it is essential to raise awareness and provide alternative livelihoods for the local community to reduce the number of these precious species ending up in markets. Failure to address this issue could have severe long-term impacts on marine biodiversity and the diving industry.

Efforts to impose a total ban on shark hunting and finning, coupled with stronger enforcement measures, are crucial in protecting these magnificent creatures. It is imperative to promote responsible fishing practices, encourage sustainable tourism, and ensure the preservation of marine ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.
