Summer Rain Triggers Charles River Sewage Contamination, Urging Infrastructure Upgrades
Despite the pleasant weather that Boston experienced on Tuesday, the heavy rainfall this summer continues to have a negative impact on the Charles River. While the river may appear pristine and inviting, signs along the Esplanade serve as a sobering reminder that sewage contamination has occurred.
Theresa Adams, who was out for a bike ride with her family, expressed her disappointment, stating, I mean, look, it looks pristine and gorgeous, so that’s disheartening. The Charles River Watershed Association reports that the rain over the weekend resulted in enough sewage flowing into the river to fill 500 tanker trucks.
Max Rome, in charge of the organization’s storm water program, highlights the severity of the situation, stating, All sorts of human pathogens, so there’s viruses, there’s bacterial contamination. This contamination isn’t limited to the Charles River alone but also affects King’s Beach in Lynn, which was marked with red flags and caution tape. Additionally, an entrance sign warns visitors about unsafe bacteria levels.
Consequently, concerned residents like Debbie Garafolo, who enjoys swimming, are left frustrated. Garafolo comments, I love swimming. I would go in there. Many members of the community are advocating for infrastructure upgrades to address the issue. Amanda Borroughs, a Lynn resident and member of a Facebook group dedicated to raising awareness about the problem, states, I would like to see the infrastructure upgraded to eliminate the sewage coming up.
To tackle this ongoing issue, the Charles River Watershed Association emphasizes the need for more green infrastructure to absorb storm runoff. Rome suggests implementing features such as rain gardens and tree trenches, which have proven successful in other cities facing similar challenges. However, he also proposes a substantial investment of between 30 and 60 million dollars for projects like a big box culvert or micro tunnels.
Rome concludes by highlighting the stark contrast between the exceptional beauty of the Charles River and the active sewage contamination it faces. He says, I think the juxtaposition of this incredible bucolic amazing river resource with active sewage contamination is something that we should all be outraged about.
