Lumber River United Way Unveils Renovated Iconic Building, Saves $180K to Benefit Community

The local community in Lumberton, joined by county commissioners, city council members, and a representative from United Way of North Carolina, gathered downtown to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the kickoff for the 2023 campaign of Lumber River United Way (LRUW). The event took place at the organization’s new location, where they unveiled the renovated iconic building.

City Councilman Leroy Rising expressed his admiration for the historic building, describing it as a structure that has stood the test of time. Thanks to generous donations from several financial supporters, LRUW managed to secure $140,000 specifically for renovating the building without utilizing any funds from the previous annual campaign.

Tate Johnson, the Executive Director of Lumber River United Way, acknowledged the contributions made by the City of Lumberton and the Cannon Foundation. He also expressed gratitude for the $10,000 IT grant provided by United Way Worldwide, which will further support their efforts. Johnson emphasized that not a single dollar from last year’s campaign was used for the building renovation, as it was funded through a separate capital campaign.

With a 15-year lease agreement for the building at a nominal cost of $1 per year, LRUW estimates that they will save approximately $180,000, allowing them to pour those funds back into the community. It is worth noting that all the contractors involved in the renovation process were sourced from Robeson County, reflecting LRUW’s commitment to supporting local businesses.

Brittany Pruitt Fletcher, President, and CEO of United Way of North Carolina, shared an inspiring story about a man named Martin, residing in Texas, who reached out to United Way in North Carolina for assistance. Fletcher highlighted how the United Way network extends its services compassionately across communities, regardless of geographical boundaries. She encouraged the people of Lumberton to consider the impact of their donations and the numerous individuals like Martin who benefit.

Mayor Bruce Davis commended LRUW for the wise decision to repurpose the iconic building, emphasizing the significant investments made in downtown Lumberton this year and promising even more in the future. The mayor expressed gratitude to the Robeson County Commissioners for their cooperation and partnership throughout the revitalization process.

Councilman Rising shared a personal connection with the building, recalling that 53 years ago, he began his career there as a member of the survey party for the NCDOT. Rising drew parallels between the NCDOT and the United Way, acknowledging both as service agencies that have positively impacted and continue to serve the community’s needs.

The renovation of the building coincides with the ongoing revitalization of Downtown Lumberton, bringing a renewed sense of vibrancy and purpose to the area. LRUW’s dedication to supporting the community shines through their efforts and the successful execution of this project.

LRUW operates from their new address at 301 North Water Street in Lumberton. Individuals seeking further information about LRUW can contact Tate Johnson at 910-739-4249.
