Muskegon Seeks Artists for Street Murals in Lakeside Business District

Muskegon, MI – The city of Muskegon is excited to announce its search for talented artists to create vibrant street murals in the Lakeside Business District. Thanks to a $5,000 micro grant from the Michigan Municipal League, the city now has the funding in hand to bring this exciting project to life.

The Lakeside Cross Walk Art Project aims to enhance the visual appeal of the Lakeshore Drive pavement through the creation of four stunning murals. These murals will be painted on the crosswalks at Mann, Moon, Torrent, and Blodgett streets.

Local artists are invited to submit their applications for this unique opportunity. Each selected artist will receive a $1,000 stipend, along with $250 for materials. The city encourages artists to design murals that celebrate the beauty of Lakeside, Muskegon Lake, and the City of Muskegon. Applicants are required to provide information about their background and public art experience, along with a mockup of their proposed concept and photos of their previous artwork.

Applications for this project can be found by clicking here. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. on August 7, with awardees anticipated to be announced by August 18.

To ensure a cohesive timeline, the murals are expected to be completed in just one day during the second half of September.

This initiative not only offers a platform for local artists to showcase their talent, but it also aims to beautify the Lakeside Business District and create a visually appealing environment for residents and visitors alike. By enlivening the city streets, these murals will contribute to the vibrant culture and artistic identity of Muskegon.

The Lakeside Cross Walk Art Project is a testament to the city’s commitment to supporting the arts and promoting local talent. By showcasing the creativity and imagination of its artists, Muskegon hopes to foster a sense of pride and appreciation for the cultural heritage of the community.

This exciting announcement comes on the heels of the upcoming Muskegon City Commission primary, where three candidates in Ward 2 will be vying for a seat. Additionally, in Ward 4, the city commission primary will see three candidates competing for the position.

It’s worth noting that water bills in Muskegon are set to increase in order to address a $2 million deficit and help pay off debt. This move is aimed at improving the financial stability of the city and ensuring the continued provision of essential services to its residents.

As Muskegon looks to the future, the city remains committed to promoting artistic expression, supporting local talent, and fostering a thriving community for its residents.
