In a shocking incident in Bihar’s East Champaran district, a woman was brutally beaten by a group of men in public. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took immediate action by taking suo motu cognizance of the incident. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has demanded a comprehensive action taken report from the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) within three days.
Expressing grave concern over the safety of women in the state, the NCW tweeted from its official handle on Friday, stating that they have taken suo motu cognizance of the brutal incident. Union Minister and Begusarai MP Giriraj Singh brought attention to the incident by sharing a video clip on social media where the woman was seen being mercilessly thrashed by a group of men in public. According to the video, the men accused the woman of having an illicit relationship with a man.
Responding to Giriraj Singh’s tweet, the NCW decided to intervene and demanded a detailed action taken report from the DGP of Bihar. The incident took place in a village under Ramgarhwa police station on July 18. The video, which went viral, showed a mob beating up a couple with sticks. Shockingly, the mob even handed over a stick to the couple and forced them to beat each other.
The East Champaran police have already registered a case of atrocities against women in connection to the incident. In an update, East Champaran Superintendent of Police Kantesh Mishra informed reporters that three individuals involved in the assault have been arrested and sent to jail.
The NCW’s prompt action highlights the need to address the safety concerns of women in Bihar. The incident once again raises questions about the prevailing law and order situation in the state. With the CM Nitish Kumar‘s ambition to become the Prime Minister, incidents reminiscent of the Taliban appear to be happening frequently in Bihar, as mentioned by Union Minister Giriraj Singh. It is crucial for the authorities to take swift and strict actions against the perpetrators to ensure justice for the victim and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The National Commission for Women’s intervention and demand for a comprehensive action taken report demonstrate their commitment to addressing the issue of violence against women. The incident should serve as a wake-up call, urging authorities to take immediate and concrete steps towards creating a safer environment for women in Bihar. Public safety and the well-being of women must remain a top priority, and stringent measures need to be put in place to deter such acts of violence.
