Father Rescues Baby from Hot Locked Car in Texas Heat Wave
A heart-stopping incident caught on video has shed light on the dangers of leaving children locked inside hot cars. In the midst of a scorching heat wave in Texas, a father took drastic measures to save his infant child after accidentally locking the keys in their car. The incident occurred at an H-E-B fuel station in Harlingen, where temperatures soared to 100 degrees.

Sergeant Larry Moore from the Harlingen Police Department commended the father’s brave actions, expressing understanding of the urgency to protect his child. As a parent, I can understand the urgency to remove his child quickly from the vehicle, said Moore. He also took the opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of checking the backseat of their vehicles before locking the doors and walking away.

According to the non-profit organization Kids and Car Safety, over 1,050 children have tragically died in hot cars across the United States since 1990. Shockingly, 55% of these incidents occur when children are unknowingly left inside vehicles.
Janette Fennell, the founder of Kids and Car Safety, speculated that miscommunication often plays a role in unintentional lock-ins. Parents may mistakenly assume that the other person has the keys and inadvertently lock the car while the child remains inside. Fennell emphasized the importance of double-checking the presence of the keys before leaving the vehicle.
It remains unclear why the woman in the video did not exit the car using the door handle. Sergeant Moore suggested that stress might have played a role, stating that in stressful situations, people may not consider all available options and choose the quickest course of action. Child safety locks can also complicate matters, as parents may unintentionally lock themselves out of the car when momentarily leaving their child inside.
To prevent such incidents, Kids and Car Safety advises drivers to keep a spare key accessible, either in a wallet or with a trusted friend. Acting promptly is crucial, as temperatures inside a locked car can rise rapidly, endangering a child’s life. Within the first 10 minutes of a car being shut, temperatures can spike up to 20 degrees. Darker-colored cars and those with darker interiors tend to heat up slightly faster than vehicles with lighter exteriors and interiors.
