Military Spouses Petition Senators to End Impasse on Confirming Promotions

When you’re doing all of that to make it work, and then you have this kind of potential blockage hanging over your head at any point, it makes it all seem a lot less worth it, said Murphy.
Since late February, Senator Tuberville has utilized a procedural tactic called a hold to prevent the confirmation of all general and flag officers. His opposition stems from the Pentagon’s policy of covering leave and travel expenses for service members who require abortions. Although a hold cannot prevent the Senate from confirming nominees, it does require individual roll call votes on each nominee, which prolongs the process. With over 250 nominees caught in the hold, it is estimated that it will take more than 80 days to confirm them all. Pentagon officials anticipate that by the end of the year, approximately 650 nominees will be affected by the hold.
As the hold approaches its sixth month and begins to create vacancies within the Joint Chiefs of Staff, pressure is mounting on Senator Tuberville to reconsider. Eight Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee penned a letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, urging him to take stronger action to resolve the situation.
