In a recent military development, a Ukrainian missile strike in the port city of Berdyansk reportedly destroyed a hotel that housed Russian military commanders, resulting in the death of a high-ranking Russian general. The attack was confirmed by Ukrainian officials, who stated that the Dune hotel, where the military leadership of the occupants resided, was completely destroyed.
The Russian-appointed official in Zaporizhzhia, Vladimir Rogov, also confirmed the Ukrainian missile strike on Berdyansk. According to Ukrainian officials Petro Andryushchenko and Anton Gerashchenko, the strike claimed the life of Russian Lieutenant General Oleg Tsokov. Andryushchenko, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, revealed that it had been known for some time that the enemy’s military leadership was residing in the targeted hotel.
Gerashchenko further informed that Tsokov was under sanctions imposed by the EU, UK, and New Zealand. As the commander of the 144th motorized rifle division of Russia’s 20th combined arms army, Tsokov had participated in the two Chechen wars as well as the conflict in Syria.
Member of Ukrainian Parliament Yuriy Mysyagin confirmed the death of Tsokov, stating that the British Storm Shadow missile had accurately hit its target in the occupied Berdyansk area. Additionally, Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov reported that the Dune hotel had caught fire, resulting in the deaths of dozens of Russian soldiers, including at least one general. He also mentioned that the grounds of an industrial facility, used as a base by the Russian occupiers, had caught fire as well.
Russian Defense Committee member Andrei Gurulyov acknowledged Tsokov’s death, describing it as a heroic one. He added that Tsokov was highly respected and held immense authority within the Russian armed forces.
However, the Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to confirm Tsokov’s death.
