Title: Old Video From Haryana Misidentified as Recent Waterlogging in Delhi
In a case of misinformation, an old video showcasing people pushing an SUV trapped in a flooded road has been circulating on social media, falsely claiming that the incident took place in Delhi. However, fact-checking website BOOM has confirmed that the video is not recent and actually depicts a waterlogged area in Haryana’s Rohtak.
Earlier this month, Delhi experienced heavy rainfall, with over 30 percent more rainfall than its July quota. The severity of the situation prompted the Delhi government to issue a flood warning. As news about waterlogged areas in Delhi spread on social media, some users took advantage of the situation and shared an old video with a caption mocking Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
BOOM Hindi, a fact-checking organization, debunked the same video in 2022 when it had gone viral with false claims of it happening in Delhi. They discovered a Facebook post from July 2, 2022, mentioning the incident occurred in Haryana. Additionally, a Twitter user from June 30, 2022, had also previously tweeted the video, stating it was from Haryana’s Huda Complex area.
Further examination of the video revealed the presence of a Jio Digital Life Store. Using this clue, BOOM conducted a keyword search on Google Maps to geolocate the area. A frame-to-frame comparison between the viral video and the Huda Complex area in Rohtak on Google Street View confirmed the video’s actual location.
Several other users had also uploaded similar videos showcasing waterlogged conditions in Rohtak, Haryana, during the same time period. A video from June 30, 2022, can be found on YouTube, showcasing the heavy rainfall and waterlogging in the area.
A report by Amar Ujala, published on July 1, 2022, highlighted the heavy rainfall that led to waterlogged areas in various parts of Rohtak, Haryana.
It is crucial to stay vigilant and verify the authenticity of content before sharing it on social media platforms. Misinformation like this not only spreads panic but also diminishes the credibility of genuine reports and affects the overall public perception of important issues.
Overall, it is evident that the video falsely claiming to depict waterlogging in Delhi is, in fact, an old video from Haryana’s Rohtak. It is essential to rely on verified news sources and fact-checking organizations to combat the spread of misinformation, especially during times of crisis or severe weather conditions.
