India’s Hottest June in Over a Century, According to IMD

India experienced its warmest June since 1901, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD also reported that the country received 10% less rainfall last month compared to its Long Period Average (LPA) of 1971-2020. Southern peninsular India had its warmest June on record, with an average maximum temperature of 34.05 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the rainfall in this region was the lowest since 1901.

In its monthly climate summary, the IMD noted that several regions, including East and Northeast India, South Peninsular India, and parts of Northwest and Central India, recorded maximum temperatures that were above normal by 4.4 degrees Celsius. These hotter-than-usual temperatures contributed to India’s overall warmest June in over a century.

The reduced rainfall during June is a concern for farmers and agricultural activities in the country. With rainfall falling below the Long Period Average, there could be implications for crop production and water resources. The IMD’s data shows that the total rainfall recorded in June was 148.6 millimeters, compared to the LPA of 165.3 millimeters.

This deviation from the norm raises questions about the impact of climate change on India’s weather patterns. While it is important to note that weather fluctuations can occur naturally, the warming trend and decrease in rainfall are consistent with the projections of climate scientists. These patterns align with the expectation that climate change will lead to more extreme weather events, including heatwaves and altered precipitation patterns.

The consequences of the high temperatures and reduced rainfall are evident in various sectors. Agriculture, in particular, heavily relies on adequate rainfall to ensure successful crop growth and yield. Insufficient rainfall can adversely affect agricultural productivity, leading to lower crop yields and potential economic losses. The government and farmers will need to consider appropriate mitigation strategies and adapt to these changing weather patterns.

The IMD’s findings also have implications for public health. Heatwaves can put vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, at risk. Higher temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses and even fatalities. It is essential for individuals to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated and seeking shade, during periods of extreme heat.

While the warmer temperatures and reduced rainfall may have immediate consequences, India’s vulnerability to climate change extends beyond one month. It underscores the need for sustained efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Adaptation measures, such as enhancing water management practices and investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, are crucial for long-term resilience.

As India continues to grapple with the impacts of a changing climate, it is essential to consider strategies that promote sustainable development and mitigate emissions. Increased awareness, policy initiatives, and international cooperation will be vital in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. By taking proactive steps, India can strive for a more sustainable and resilient future.
