The Australian Youth Orchestra is set to perform a moving symphonic work, honouring one of Australia’s most notable activists, William Cooper. Conducted and orchestrated by renowned composer Nigel Westlake, the piece will include a full version of “Ngapa William Cooper”, telling the story of the Aboriginal leader’s 1938 protest against the Nazi Germany-era Kristallnacht. Co-created by Westlake, Lou Bennett and Lior, with additional lyrics by Sarah Gory, the work is said to be an ideal fit for the talents of Australia’s gifted school-aged musicians. The concert will be held at Llewellyn Hall and include The Glass Solider and the orchestral premiere of Beneath the Waves, taken from Westlake’s score for the 2022 movie Blueback. Lior and Bennett will join Westlake for a performance that promises to be a cinematic and emotional exploration of Cooper’s life. With the primary narrative written by Lior and translated into Yorta Yorta by Bennett, the entire story has now been transformed into 40 minutes of full symphonic music, exceeding the original work’s chamber ensemble format premiered at the Adelaide Festival earlier this year.
