LEOMINSTER, MASS. – FEMA’s denial of a disaster declaration for Massachusetts communities impacted by the September floods has ignited frustration and disappointment among local representatives and residents. The major flooding, caused by historic rain, devastated Leominster and other areas, resulting in destroyed infrastructure and widespread devastation.

Representative James McGovern expressed his strong opposition to FEMA’s decision, labeling the denial as unacceptable and unconscionable. McGovern witnessed firsthand the catastrophic aftermath of the floods and emphasized the profound loss experienced by families and small business owners.

Homes were completely leveled, cars were washed away, and kids were forced to learn in classrooms that were filled with water and mud only days earlier, McGovern stated.

The denial of the major disaster declaration by FEMA left Governor Maura Healey disappointed, as she had hoped it would bring much-needed federal assistance to Worcester, Bristol, and Hamden counties. However, FEMA argued that the state possesses the capability to handle the damages without additional funding.

In response, Massachusetts plans to appeal the decision, with McGovern actively advocating for a reversal of FEMA’s recommendation. McGovern has been in communication with various officials, from the mayor of Leominster to the White House, urging President Biden to intervene and support the governor’s appeal.

According to McGovern, FEMA’s refusal places an excessive burden on affected families, forcing them to shoulder the financial strain of recovery. He criticized the agency’s approach, stating, Now, FEMA is telling these families to figure this out on your own – to rack up credit card debt, drain retirement accounts, and deal with greedy insurance companies who want to find every way possible not to pay out damage claims.

McGovern emphasized Massachusetts’ track record of efficient and self-sufficiency, asserting that in this time of need, FEMA’s denial comes as an unexpected blow. The congressman remains hopeful that President Biden will recognize the urgency of the situation and reverse FEMA’s recommendation.

As the state prepares to mount an appeal, the affected communities and their representatives are hopeful that their plea for federal support will be heard and acted upon. The devastating impact of the September floods requires immediate attention and assistance, with residents eager to rebuild and recover from the destruction caused by the historic rain.
