Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, has announced that bookings are now open for its newest English language proficiency test, PTE Core. This test has received approval from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the purposes of permanent economic immigration to Canada or Canadian citizenship. Starting from February 12, individuals can take the PTE Core test to provide proof of their English language proficiency.
PTE Core is a computer-based exam that takes two hours and is conducted in a test center environment. It assesses four key English language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. While it shares many characteristics with the existing PTE Academic test, PTE Core focuses on real-life, non-academic language skills specifically tailored to meet Canada’s migration needs and the IRCC’s language proficiency requirements.
Gio Giovannelli, President of the English Language Learning division at Pearson, expressed excitement about the launch of PTE Core, stating that it allows test-takers to demonstrate their English proficiency in a way that reflects real-life language skills. With Canada’s emphasis on economic growth and post-pandemic recovery, the acceptance of PTE Core by IRCC comes at an opportune time. The approval of this test opens new opportunities for test-takers, particularly in high-demand professions such as nursing, engineering, and web development.
In addition to PTE Core, the IRCC has also accepted PTE Academic as an approved English proficiency test for Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa applications since August 2023. PTE Academic is already recognized by the majority of universities and colleges in Canada, as well as being accepted for visa applications by the governments of the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Furthermore, PTE Academic is accepted by all Australian, New Zealand, and Irish universities, as well as 99% of UK universities.
To provide test-takers with convenience and accessibility, PTE Core can be booked online up to 24 hours in advance. The results are typically available within two days of completing the test.
