Rebuilding Trust: The Key to Tackling Global Challenges

Voters pass by a polling site in Warwick, Rhode Island, in 2022. Elections are just one arena that has been shaken by a lapse in trust.

A few years ago, we embarked on a mission to identify the most pressing theme or quality in world news. This led us to launch The Respect Project, exploring how respect could address issues like racial prejudice, LGBTQ+ rights, and political polarization. We later expanded the initiative with Finding Resilience, highlighting stories of resilience amidst the pandemic and climate change.

Now, as we step into a momentous year, we find ourselves questioning what deserves our attention in the news. The answer is trust.

In February, the Monitor will embark on a Monitor-wide initiative called Rebuilding Trust. This initiative aims to tackle the issue of trust, which lies at the heart of numerous global challenges, from the American presidential election and the war in Gaza to artificial intelligence, economic growth, and climate change. Trust is what greases the wheels of progress, and without it, the engine falters.

It’s hard to ignore the prevailing sense of gloom in the world today, despite the many positive trends we witnessed in 2023. To understand this, we must start with trust.

Trust has become a buzzword, often associated with crisis. People have lost faith in institutions, politics, the economy, and even our ability to save the planet. But is trust truly on the decline?

According to a comprehensive report by the British polling firm Ipsos, trust may not have declined as much as perceived. The report suggests that the spotlight on trust may stem from an increasingly vocal global population that demands better from governments, institutions, and industries. The growing skepticism could be viewed as a call for improvement.

Insights from the Edelman Trust Barometer further shed light on the situation. While economies hold relative stability, the barometer highlights that 83 percent of workers express deep concerns about factors like automation, the gig economy, lack of training, cheaper competition abroad, and immigration, fearing job losses. Distrust often arises from uncertainty, and we are certainly experiencing an era of great uncertainty.

To rebuild trust, we must first focus on being trustworthy ourselves. Building trust involves embodying values like thoughtfulness, responsibility, and honesty. This is why trust is such a central theme in the news – it signifies the pursuit of higher motives and the quest for progress.

Our mission is to seek out trust-building initiatives and stories. Trust serves as our compass, guiding us toward areas where we can collectively do better. There is no better use for our journalism than to explore and amplify the ways in which the world is striving and succeeding in rebuilding trust.

As we delve into this initiative, we will pay attention to the interests and needs of our audience. Our goal is to provide clear and concise reporting, avoiding unnecessary technical terms and jargon. We also aim to abide by legal and ethical standards, ensuring accuracy while avoiding defamation, libel, and invasion of privacy.

Join us in this endeavor as we embark on Rebuilding Trust. Together, we can pave the way for a future grounded in trust, progress, and unity.
