India Emerges as 5th Largest Source of Tourists for US
A growing, affluent middle class and younger, intrepid Indians traveling to the United States have propelled India to become the fifth largest source of tourism to the US. According to Brand USA’s chief marketing officer Staci Mellman, Indian tourists spend significantly more on average compared to other international travelers, contributing to the $173.9 billion spent by international tourists visiting the US.
The projected growth rate of Indian tourists in the US stands at a remarkable 30% by 2024. This surge in spending, particularly from January to October 2023 compared to the previous year, coincides with improvements in visa processing delays, enhanced flight connectivity, and an expanded range of tourism products.
In 2023, the US received 1.7 million Indian visitors. There is a lot more interest in exploring beyond the gateway, and Indian travelers also spend significantly more than other international travelers, explained Staci Mellman in an exclusive interview with TOI.
Despite the lingering challenge of delays in visa processing, which currently takes around 250 days, Mellman mentioned that there has been a noticeable reduction in wait times. She stated, In 2023, 1.2 million new visas were issued to Indians traveling to the US. The US has also opened 2.5 lakh new tourist visa appointments for Indians. The Consulate in Hyderabad now accommodates 3,500 appointments daily, including processing over the weekends.
This upward trend in Indian tourism to the US reveals the travel aspirations of the emerging middle class in India.
