Iran has officially named the five Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officers who were killed in a recent strike in Damascus, including the intelligence chief and his deputy. The identities of the officers were revealed by Nour News, a media outlet believed to have close ties to Iran’s intelligence apparatus. Among the deceased are Gen. Sadegh Omidzadeh, the intelligence deputy of the guard’s expeditionary Quds Force in Syria, and his deputy known as Hajj Gholam. The IRGC later confirmed the deaths of Hojjatollah Omidvar, Ali Aghazadeh, Hossein Mohammadi, Saeed Karimi, and Mohammad Amin Samadi, although it did not provide their ranks. The conflicting information has yet to be reconciled. The strike in Damascus raises concerns about the ongoing tensions between Iran and its rivals in the region, as well as its repercussions on the already unstable situation in Syria.
