Türkish Foreign Ministry pays tribute to Azerbaijani martyrs

Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry has shared a post on its social media account about January 20 – National Day of Mourning in Azerbaijan, News.Az reports.

We respectfully honor the memory of our Azerbaijani brothers who died for Azerbaijan’s independence on January 20, 1990, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on X.

On January 20, 1990, the Soviet army forces entered Baku to suppress the masses protesting the USSR-supported Armenian aggression based on territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

The entry of Soviet troops resulted in an unprecedented tragedy for Azerbaijan. Valiant sons and daughters of Azerbaijan put the country’s freedom, honor, and dignity above everything else, sacrificed their lives, and became martyrs.

During the tragedy, 147 people were killed, 744 were severely injured, and 841 were illegally arrested. As a result of the Soviet army’s operations, 200 apartments, houses, private and state property were destroyed.

While delivering a speech at a meeting held on January 21, 1990, at the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan in Moscow in connection with the tragedy, Heydar Aliyev sharply criticized the perpetrators of this incident. Heydar Aliyev stressed that the incident did not correspond to the law, democracy, humanism, and the principles of the rule of law in Azerbaijan.

Despite many years passing since those bloody days, Azerbaijanis remember the dreadful night that took many innocent lives and mark the anniversary of the January 20 tragedy every year.

In memory of the martyrs, the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s tribute reflects the strong bond between Azerbaijan and Turkey. This gesture signifies the unwavering support and solidarity that exists between the two nations.

The tragedy of January 20, 1990, stands as a reminder of the brutal consequences of foreign aggression and the courage displayed by the Azerbaijani people in defense of their homeland. The Azerbaijani martyrs have become emblematic of the country’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

As the years go by, the memory of this tragedy remains deeply etched in the hearts of Azerbaijanis. The January 20 commemoration serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives for the cause of independence and the preservation of Azerbaijani identity.

These commemorations also emphasize the importance of cherishing and preserving peace, stability, and sovereignty. It is a time when the Azerbaijani people come together to honor the memory of their fallen heroes and recommit themselves to the pursuit of justice and prosperity.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry’s tribute is a testament to the enduring friendship and shared values between Turkey and Azerbaijan. The bonds between the two countries extend beyond political and diplomatic relations, encompassing historical, cultural, and fraternal ties.

Through this tribute, the Turkish Foreign Ministry reaffirms its commitment to supporting Azerbaijan and standing shoulder to shoulder with the Azerbaijani people. It highlights the profound solidarity that exists between the two nations and serves as a reminder of the unwavering support that Turkey provides to Azerbaijan.

As the world continues to navigate complex geopolitical challenges, it is essential to recognize and remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence and freedom. The memory of the Azerbaijani martyrs will forever serve as a symbol of courage and resilience, inspiring future generations to safeguard their nations’ sovereignty and stand up against acts of aggression.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry’s tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the shared history and brotherhood between Turkey and Azerbaijan. It underscores the importance of preserving and nurturing these close ties for the benefit of both nations and the broader regional stability.

On this solemn occasion, Azerbaijanis and their Turkish counterparts join hands in paying tribute to the martyrs and expressing their unyielding commitment to preserving peace, justice, and the sovereignty of their homelands. Together, they stand united against any acts of aggression and firmly believe in the triumph of freedom, dignity, and independence.

As the world reflects on the tragic events of January 20, 1990, let us remember the sacrifices made by the Azerbaijani martyrs and honor their memory, not just on this day, but every day. May their courage and determination continue to guide and inspire us all in the pursuit of a more just and peaceful world.
