The Ohio Unemployment Rate Increases between November and December 2023
DAYTON, Ohio – The unemployment rate in Ohio experienced a slight increase during the month of December 2023, according to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. With a rate of 3.7 percent, the state saw a rise from November’s rate of 3.6 percent.
Despite the increase in unemployment, December marked a significant milestone for Ohio’s job market. It saw the highest payroll employment reported since 1990, as the state’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased by 7,000. The revised total for November was 5,654,100, and December saw that number increase to 5,661,100.
Throughout December, the number of unemployed workers in Ohio reached 214,000, which reflects an increase of 2,000 compared to November. However, when compared to the same month in the previous year, there was a decrease from the 236,000 unemployed individuals reported.
In December 2022, Ohio’s unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent, marking a 0.4 percent increase compared to the 3.7 percent reported a year later. These figures closely aligned with the national unemployment rate, which also stood at 3.7 percent for December 2023.
