Houthi Missile Strikes US Cargo Ship in Red Sea, Raising Tensions, Yemen

A Houthi ballistic missile has struck a US-owned and operated cargo ship in the Red Sea, according to a statement by the US Central Command. The attack on the Gibraltar Eagle marks the first time the Houthis have successfully targeted a US-operated vessel, escalating tensions in the region. The incident comes just days after a US-led coalition carried out strikes against the Iranian-backed rebel group in Yemen, warning of further action if Houthi attacks continue.

The Gibraltar Eagle, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier owned and operated by US-based Eagle Bulk, sustained minor damage in the attack and reported no injuries. The ship is continuing its journey without significant disruption. Eagle Bulk Shipping confirmed the incident and stated that the vessel had been hit by an unidentified projectile. The cargo hold suffered limited damage, but the ship remains stable and the crew is unharmed.

The UK Maritime Security Agency (UKMTO) has also received a report about the attack, and vessels in the area have been advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity. The Houthis have not officially claimed responsibility for the strike on the Gibraltar Eagle.

Following the US-led strikes on Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen, the Biden administration emphasized its commitment to defending US assets and interests in the region. The strikes were portrayed as a last-resort option aimed at preventing further escalation. The Houthis, in turn, promised to retaliate, declaring US and UK assets as legitimate targets. Since mid-November, the rebel group has launched around 30 attacks on international shipping lanes in the Red Sea, leading many major shipping companies to avoid the area.

Earlier on Monday, the Houthis attempted to launch an anti-ship ballistic missile, which failed and crashed in Yemen. However, a total of three missiles were launched toward the Red Sea, with one impacting the US-owned and operated vessel. The US and UK carried out additional strikes on Friday, targeting a radar facility used by the Houthis.

The situation in the Red Sea continues to be of concern, as the Houthis pose a threat to international shipping and have demonstrated their ability to strike US-owned or operated ships. The US and its allies remain committed to defending their assets and interests. As tensions persist, the maritime community and relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of vessels in the region.
