The United States says commitment to Taiwan ‘rock solid’, looks forward to continuity under new administration

TAIPEI – The United States expressed its unwavering commitment to Taiwan, affirming its support for the island under the new Taiwanese administration. Former U.S. National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley conveyed this message to Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday, following the victory of Lai Ching-te from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the presidential election.

In a demonstration of solidarity with Taiwan, President Joe Biden plans to send an unofficial delegation to the Chinese-claimed island. This move challenges Beijing’s sovereignty claims, which Taiwan’s government firmly rejects.

The Biden administration has harbored concerns that the election, transition, and new administration would heighten tensions with Beijing. China has exerted military and economic pressure on Taiwan to assert its sovereignty claims.

During the meeting with President Tsai, Stephen Hadley praised Taiwan for its exemplary democracy, stating that it serves as a shining example to the world. We are honored to have the opportunity to meet with you today to reaffirm that the American commitment to Taiwan is rock solid, principled and bipartisan, and that the United States stands with its friends, Hadley expressed, as reported by Tsai’s office.

Hadley also expressed his anticipation of meeting with Lai and other political leaders, highlighting the desire for continuity in the relationship between Taiwan and the United States. He emphasized the importance of common efforts to uphold cross-strait peace and stability.

China, which has never relinquished the option of using force to bring Taiwan under its control, has criticized several countries for congratulating Lai on his election victory. China argues that these countries should not interfere in its internal affairs. However, Taiwan’s government asserts that Beijing has no authority to speak for the island’s people or represent them on the global stage.

The United States’ reaffirmation of its commitment to Taiwan is likely to be welcomed by many in Taiwan who rely on the support of their long-time ally. The Taiwanese people have been living under the constant threat of aggression from China, which considers the island part of its territory. The relationship between the United States and Taiwan holds significant strategic importance in the Asia-Pacific region.

The continuity in the Taiwan-U.S. relationship under the new administration provides stability and reassurance to Taiwan amidst growing tensions with China. Both Taiwan and the United States share a commitment to democratic values and have a mutual interest in preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

As the new administration in Taiwan takes office on May 20, many will be closely watching how the relationship between Taiwan and the United States evolves. The Taiwanese people hope that the robust support from the United States will help them navigate the challenges posed by China, ensuring their continued security and prosperity.
