Donald Trump has been ordered to pay $393,000 in legal fees to The New York Times and three of its reporters after a judge ruled against him in a lawsuit. The lawsuit, which dates back to 2021, involved a Pulitzer-winning story published in 2018 regarding the Trump family’s wealth and tax filings. Trump had sued the Times and reporters Susanne Craig, David Barstow, and Russ Buettner, alleging that his niece, Mary Trump, violated the terms of a settlement agreement by sharing tax records with the journalists. However, the Times and its reporters were dismissed from the case in May. Although Trump’s lawyers argued that the legal fees were exorbitant and should be reduced, Judge Robert Reed deemed the amount of $392,638.69 to be reasonable. Times spokesperson Danielle Rhoades Ha stated that the ruling sends a message to those who attempt to silence journalists through misuse of the legal system. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, expressed disappointment but noted that the court had reaffirmed their claims against Mary Trump. Despite the setback, Craig expressed her joy by posting a celebratory thumbs-up emoji on the social media platform X.
