A devastating flood has hit both Ukraine and Russia, resulting in the loss of at least 57 lives so far. The flooding occurred after the Kakhovka dam under Russia’s control was breached on June 6th, causing widespread damage throughout the Kherson region of Ukraine and Russia.
According to Kyiv officials, Russia is to blame for the disaster, alleging that the dam was deliberately blown up as an act of hostility towards Ukraine. On the other hand, Russia contends that Ukraine’s dynamite use during dredging work near the dam site caused the breach.
Regardless of who is responsible, the people in the affected areas are paying the price, with sixteen lives lost and thirty-one others missing in Ukraine, while forty-one deaths have been confirmed in regions under Russian control. This disaster has also displaced thousands of residents, leaving them with nowhere to go.
The situation has created tension between the two neighboring countries, with each blaming the other. While it’s difficult to know who the real culprit is in this situation, the result remains the same: lives have been lost and communities have been destroyed.
