Former kickboxer and social media influencer, Andrew Tate, has been accused of rape, human trafficking, and forming a criminal group in Romania. Along with co-defendants, Tate allegedly misled and coerced seven women into performing pornographic acts. Tate has denied the charges and is arguing to remain under house arrest rather than in police custody. The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) in Romania alleges that Tate and his co-defendants created a criminal group in 2021 to commit human trafficking in Romania, the US, and Great Britain. Tate first rose to fame on Big Brother and has millions of Twitter followers, using the platform to spread disparaging messages and has been banned from multiple social media platforms in the past. Romanian officials are moving to confiscate assets owned by Tate, his brother, and the two other Romanian defendants, including luxury cars and watches, and approximately $300 million in cryptocurrency. If convicted, the human trafficking and rape charges both carry sentences of up to ten years in prison.
