US Releases Ally of Venezuela’s President Maduro in Swap for 10 Jailed Americans
The Biden administration has successfully completed a prisoner exchange with Venezuela, securing the release of 10 American citizens who were imprisoned in the South American country. In exchange for their freedom, the US has granted clemency to an ally of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The released Americans are currently en route back to the United States, bringing their long and unjust detention to an end.
President Biden expressed his gratitude for the resolution, stating, These individuals have lost far too much precious time with their loved ones, and their families have suffered every day in their absence. I am grateful that their ordeal is finally over, and that these families are being made whole once more.
As part of the swap, Venezuela has agreed to turn over Leonard Glenn Francis, also known as Fat Leonard, who is a notorious fugitive and the mastermind behind the US Navy’s biggest corruption scandal. In addition, a prominent member of Venezuela’s opposition party, who had been charged with treason, will be released. Furthermore, Venezuela has committed to setting free 20 political prisoners and suspending arrest warrants for other opponents of Maduro.
While the identities of all the released Americans have not been disclosed, it has been confirmed that Eyvin Hernandez, Jerrel Kenemore, Joseph Cristella, and Savoi Wright are among them. Hernandez, Kenemore, and Cristella face charges of illegally crossing the border into Venezuela from Colombia in 2022. The details surrounding their arrests remain unclear. As for Wright, Venezuelan officials have not provided any information regarding the allegations against him.
On the Venezuelan side, the only person released as part of the swap is Alex Saab, an ally of President Maduro. Saab had been arrested for money laundering in 2020 and was awaiting trial.
