John Kerry, the US President Joe Biden’s climate envoy met with Pope Francis for the fourth time in the Vatican on Monday. Kerry was the first government official to meet the Pope after his release from the hospital. The contents of their discussion were not released as it is the Vatican’s usual custom for private meetings with non-heads of state. Kerry attended the meeting along with US Ambassador to the Holy See Joe Donnelly and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. Kerry mentioned that the Pope was in great spirits and in great form after his nine-day stay in the hospital to recover from his surgery. Kerry, who is a baptized Catholic, had met the Pope in the Vatican in 2014 and 2016 when he served as the US Secretary of State during Obama’s administration and in 2021 before the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. After the meeting, Kerry will be traveling to Brussels to participate in a panel discussion called Climate and Security – the New Nexus with representatives from the European Union and NATO.
