Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to China, emphasizing the potential benefits of cooperation between the U.S. and China. Xi stated that under the current world situation, we can carry out various activities that benefit our two countries, the people of our countries, and the entire human race. Despite tensions between the U.S. and China over human rights, Taiwan, and technology, the two sides have held talks on trade and other issues. Gates’ last trip to China was in 2019 when he met with first lady Peng Liyuan to discuss HIV/AIDS prevention. On Thursday, the Gates Foundation pledged $50 million to bolster the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute’s capacity to develop drugs to fight diseases like malaria and tuberculosis.
