India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has released the National Working Plan Code-2023 for the scientific management of the country’s forests. The code was unveiled by Chandra Prakash Goyal, director general of forests and special secretary for the ministry, on the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought event held in Dehradun on June 17. The code aims to assist State Forest Departments in developing working plans for their forest divisions by prescribing guidelines and incorporating the principles of sustainable forest management. Key areas covered include conservation and enhancement of biodiversity, forest health and vitality, management of soil and water resources and the provision of social, economic, and cultural benefits. The code also introduces a centralized database for continuous data collection and updating. The Indian Forest Management Standard is included in the code to provide a set of standards for sustainable forest management practices.
