Cheboygan County board members are set to review the proposed 2024 spending plan on November 28th. The budget proposal for the upcoming year mirrors that of the current year, with County administrator Jeff Lawson stating that the total spending plan would amount to approximately $17.4 million, the same as in 2023. If approved, the property tax millage rate will remain unchanged at 5.6711 mills, meaning that a homeowner with a taxable property value of $50,000 can expect to pay $283.55 in taxes to support the budget for next year.

According to Lawson, around 70 percent of the budget will go towards salaries and benefits for the county’s approximately 140 employees, similar to the allocation for this year. He further stated that there would be no significant changes in operational expenditures. Notably, the county plans to reduce spending on fleet vehicles and capital expenditures compared to 2023.

The proposed capital projects for 2024 include several vital initiatives. These include allocating $415,000 for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) work at the county building, $145,000 for enhancing energy efficiency in the county building by addressing doors and windows, $200,000 for the installation of a generator at the county building, $200,000 for renovating the circuit court, and $120,000 for repairing the senior center pavement and painting the building.

While the budget for the County Administrator’s office is set to increase from $274,652 to $292,490, the proposed budget for the office of prosecuting attorney Melissa Goodrich will experience a slight decrease from $762,575 in 2023 to $717,812 in 2024. Sheriff Tim Cook’s department is estimated to receive a budget of nearly $2.6 million, a decrease from the $2.72 million allocated this year.

The County board’s review of the proposed 2024 spending plan will provide an opportunity to assess the financial allocation for various departments and capital projects. The objective is to ensure the responsible management of funds while addressing the needs of the County and its residents. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for board members to engage in discussions regarding the proposed budget and make any necessary adjustments. Ultimately, the goal is to maintain the County’s operations effectively and efficiently while prioritizing the key aspects of its infrastructure and services.

As the review date approaches, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed and involved in the decision-making process. The proposed budget, if approved, will impact various aspects of County operations and may influence tax rates. Therefore, it is vital for residents to understand the implications and voice their opinions if they feel the need for further consideration or modifications.

The County board’s review of the 2024 spending plan reflects the importance of prudent financial management and a commitment to fiscal responsibility. By prioritizing essential projects and maintaining a budget similar to the previous year, Cheboygan County aims to ensure continuity in its services while addressing critical infrastructure needs. The forthcoming meeting will provide an opportunity for board members to thoroughly evaluate the proposed budget and make decisions that best serve the County and its residents.
