Heather Mack, the daughter of an American woman whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase at an Indonesian resort island, is scheduled to change her plea to guilty on charges of killing her mother in Bali nine years ago. Mack, who was convicted in Indonesia in 2015 for her mother Sheila von Wiese-Mack’s murder with her then-boyfriend in a bid to gain access to a $1.5 million trust fund, served seven years of her 10-year Indonesian sentence. She was then deported in 2021 and immediately arrested by U.S. agents when she landed at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The case garnered international attention due to photographs of the suitcase which seemed too small to contain an adult woman’s body. Mack’s ex-boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, was convicted of murder in Indonesia and is serving an 18-year sentence. He is charged in the same U.S. indictment.
