Former US First Lady Rosalynn Carter Dies at 96, Leaving Legacy of Humanitarianism

Rosalynn Carter, the former First Lady of the United States and wife of former President Jimmy Carter, passed away at the age of 96. She died peacefully at her home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by her family. Known for her advocacy work post-White House, Rosalynn and her husband dedicated themselves to causes such as human rights, democracy, and global health issues. Despite her influential position, Rosalynn maintained a remarkably humble public image throughout her life.

The Carter Center, the nonprofit organization founded by the couple, released a statement mourning the loss of a passionate champion of mental health, caregiving, and women’s rights. Rosalynn had been battling dementia since being diagnosed in May and had joined her husband in at-home hospice care just days before her passing.

Jimmy Carter, deeply saddened by the loss, emphasized the crucial role his wife played in his life and career. He acknowledged her wise guidance and unwavering support, stating, Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.

Rosalynn Carter was an instrumental figure in her husband’s political campaigns and became actively involved in policy matters during their time in the White House from 1977 to 1981. She attended Cabinet meetings, represented the President at ceremonial events, and acted as his personal emissary to Latin American countries.

Tributes poured in from other former occupants of the White House. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden remembered Rosalynn’s hope, warmth, and optimism, praising the Carters’ deep love as the epitome of partnership. Former President Bill Clinton and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed their gratitude for Rosalynn’s service, emphasizing her compassionate and committed advocacy for human dignity.

Born in the small town of Plains, Georgia, on August 18, 1927, Rosalynn Carter experienced hardship at a young age after her father’s death. Alongside her mother, who became a dressmaker to make ends meet, Rosalynn worked tirelessly. She met Jimmy Carter in college, and the couple married in 1946. Their enduring relationship earned them records for being the longest-wed presidential couple and, for Jimmy Carter, the title of the oldest living US president at 99 years old.

Former First Ladies Michelle Obama and Melania Trump also paid tribute to Rosalynn’s legacy. Obama fondly recalled their lunches together in the White House and Rosalynn’s words of advice, highlighting her servant’s heart and devotion to family and country. Trump acknowledged Rosalynn’s role as a loving mother, extraordinary first lady, and great humanitarian.

Survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, Rosalynn Carter leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Her son Chip Carter emphasized her significant contributions, not only as a loving mother and first lady but also as a humanitarian who made substantial advancements in mental health care and caregiving resources. Her absence will be deeply felt by her family and the countless individuals whose lives were touched by her tireless advocacy work.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who himself entered hospice care earlier this year, continues to surprise many with his resilience and enduring passion for the Carter Center’s humanitarian work. He receives visitors, remains informed about global events, and frequently indulges in his favorite treat—ice cream.
