123 Migrants, Including 34 Children, Rescued from Abandoned Trailer in Mexico – Investigation Underway

Authorities in Mexico have discovered a group of 123 migrants, including 34 children, stuck inside an abandoned trailer in the state of San Luis Potosi. The migrants, who hailed from Central and South America, were found in the town of Matehuala after residents heard their cries for help and alerted law enforcement. Medical assistance, food, and temporary accommodations were immediately provided to the migrants by officials from Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM).

The majority of the migrants were from countries such as Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador, with a few from Ecuador and Cuba. Although it remains unclear why they were abandoned in the trailer and where their intended destination was, it is common for such groups to undertake perilous journeys in an attempt to reach the United States.

Coincidentally, on the same day, police in Ciudad Juarez, located across the border from El Paso, Texas, discovered 11 Guatemalan migrants trapped in a house. Authorities have arrested three alleged human smugglers, including two minors, in connection with the incident. The attorney general of Chihuahua has initiated an investigation into the matter.

These discoveries of migrants in distress come amidst an ongoing immigration crisis, prompting calls for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a resolution introduced by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican lawmakers have accused Mayorkas of mishandling the situation at the southern border and failing to enforce immigration laws effectively.

House Republicans claim that the Biden administration’s decision to undo several of the immigration policies implemented by former President Donald Trump has exacerbated the situation, resulting in a surge of immigrants, including drug traffickers.

However, Mayorkas and the DHS have consistently refuted these allegations. Mia Ehrenberg, a spokesperson for the DHS, responded to the impeachment motion, emphasizing that Secretary Mayorkas is focused on keeping Americans safe and called for congressional collaboration to address the immigration system’s flaws.

As investigations into these incidents continue, lawmakers from both sides are grappling with the complex challenges posed by immigration, highlighting the need for comprehensive reform to address the root causes and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
