Thai Navy Faces Pressure to Buy Chinese Submarine Engine After German Embargo

Thailand is considering a deal to buy a Chinese-made submarine engine after Germany refused to supply one due to an EU embargo on arms sales to China. The Royal Thai Navy originally ordered a $402m submarine from China in 2017 but the deal was delayed after Germany refused to supply an MTU396 engine. Thai officials are scheduled to visit China this month to discuss a replacement China-made substitute engine, the CHD620, made by China Shipbuilding & Offshore International. However, there are concerns that this engine, although of improved quality, may be notoriously loud. The deal includes demands by Thailand for guarantees on replacement, compensation for the delay and a safe crew.
