Turkey Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Criticizes Israel
In the midst of the escalating crisis in Gaza, Turkey has been vocal in its criticism of Israel’s actions and has urged for an urgent ceasefire. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held separate discussions with his counterparts from Egypt and Jordan to address the dire situation unfolding in Gaza.
Turkey has long been an advocate for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and its recent intensified criticism of Israel underlines its deep concern for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Unlike the United States, the European Union, and some Gulf states, Turkey does not classify Hamas, a Palestinian group, as a terrorist organization and hosts its members.
During these important conversations, Foreign Minister Fidan, along with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, exchanged views on how to halt attacks targeting Gaza’s civilian population and how to secure an immediate ceasefire. The discussions also focused on ensuring the uninterrupted flow of crucial humanitarian aid to Gaza, where the need is dire.
Turkey has repeatedly accused Israel of war crimes, targeting civilians, and violating international law. Israel, on the other hand, contends that its actions are directed at Hamas and not innocent civilians, asserting that Hamas uses residents as human shields.
President Tayyip Erdogan echoed Turkey’s strong commitment to halt the massacre in Gaza and hold Israel accountable while addressing the issue in the Black Sea province of Rize. Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s responsibility to protect Palestinians from Israel’s actions and to put an end to the ongoing violence in Gaza. He also reaffirmed Turkey’s active engagement in these efforts and pledged continued support for the Palestinian cause.
In addition to diplomatic measures, Turkey has dispatched over 200 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Gaza through Egypt, demonstrating its commitment to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.
Foreign Minister Fidan’s upcoming meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Ankara on Monday aims to further address the pressing situation in Gaza, highlighting Turkey’s dedication to finding a resolution.
As the crisis continues, Turkey is steadfast in its pursuit of a ceasefire and resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With its strong stance and humanitarian efforts, Turkey aims to play a crucial role in advocating for peace and stability in the region.
