Los Angeles Oaxacan Community Celebrates Dia de los Muertos with Joy and Tradition

The vibrant culture of the Los Angeles Oaxacan community was on full display as they celebrated Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, with joy and tradition. This annual celebration took place at the Church of Scientology Los Angeles, where families gathered to honor their departed loved ones.

Contrary to the perception of Dia de los Muertos as a somber occasion, this festive event was filled with happiness and excitement. The Oaxacan community welcomed their deceased relatives as honored guests by serenading them, dancing traditional dances, and preparing their favorite foods. It was a heartwarming display of love and remembrance.

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles and the Monarca Purépecha Association co-hosted the event, with over 2,500 people from the Oaxacan community participating in the festivities. The Purépecha, an indigenous ethnic group from Michoacán, Mexico, brought their rich cultural heritage to the celebration, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Artisans showcased their talents at booths along L. Ron Hubbard Way, displaying a wide array of handicrafts, including jewelry and traditional clothing. The flavors of the region were also brought to life through food and drink stalls, tantalizing festival-goers’ taste buds. Additionally, captivating flower altars called ofrendas were created, adorned with marigolds and filled with photographs and other mementos to honor and welcome the departed.

The day was filled with joyful performances of folkloric dances set to traditional music. Men and women in colorful costumes showcased their skill and passion, capturing the spirit of the Oaxacan culture and celebrating the essence of life.
