Unseasonably Mild Weather Gives Way to Chilly Halloween

Baltimore experienced a stark contrast in temperatures on Sunday, with southern Maryland reaching almost 80 degrees while the northern parts of the state remained in the lower 60s. Meanwhile, Baltimore City enjoyed an exceptionally mild afternoon with temperatures in the lower 70s.

The mild weather is expected to continue into Monday, with a dry morning and unseasonably warm temperatures starting in the 60s and rising to the middle to upper 70s by lunchtime. However, things are about to change.

By midday, the sunshine will give way to thickening clouds as a strong cold front approaches from the west. While there may be scattered showers, the main story is the rapid temperature drop. By 7 PM, temperatures are expected to plummet into the 50s. Alongside the temperature change, expect cool and gusty northwest winds with speeds of 15-20 mph and gusts up to 30 mph during the afternoon and early evening.

As Halloween morning dawns, the chill sets in with temperatures in the lower 40s and windchills in the 30s. High temperatures for the day will only reach the lower to middle 50s, making trick-or-treating a chilly affair. However, at least there won’t be any rain to dampen the festivities.

And the cold weather is here to stay. Wednesday, the first day of November, will be gusty and chilly with highs in the lower 50s and persistent northwest winds of 15-20 mph and gusts of 30 mph.

Wednesday night into Thursday morning, widespread frost and freeze conditions are expected throughout Maryland. Lows will dip into the 20s and low 30s, with areas outside the Baltimore Beltway likely to experience a hard freeze.

Thursday afternoon offers little respite from the chill, with temperatures only reaching the mid-50s. However, the winds will calm down, making the air feel less cold than on Wednesday.

More widespread frost and freeze conditions are anticipated on Thursday night into Friday morning, particularly outside the Baltimore urban corridor. Temperatures will again drop into the 20s and 30s.

But there is some good news for the weekend. Saturday and Sunday are expected to have nice outdoor fall weather, with highs in the upper 60s and a mix of sunshine and clouds. This bodes well for the Ravens home game against the Seahawks, ensuring mild temperatures and sunshine for fans attending the tailgating and the game.

Lastly, a reminder to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night as daylight saving time ends. Sunday’s sunrise will occur an hour earlier at 6:38 AM EST, while sunset will also arrive an hour earlier at 5:01 PM EST.
