84-Year-Old Winona Resident Lyle C. Sauer Passes Away; Funeral Services Set for October 30th, US

Lyle C. Sauer, an 84-year-old resident of Winona, passed away on October 24, 2023, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Rochester. A funeral service will be held on October 30th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona, officiated by Fr. Russell Scepaniak. Prior to the service, there will be visitation at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home on the evening of October 29th, with a rosary prayer service, and one hour before the funeral at the church. Lyle will be buried in the parish cemetery.

Lyle was born on March 8, 1939, in Carpio, North Dakota, to Joseph and Mary Sauer. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and reserves from 1957 to 1965, receiving an honorable discharge. After obtaining his undergraduate degree from Minot State University in 1963, Lyle taught science at Minot High School. He went on to earn his master’s degree in science from North Dakota State University in 1969. Later, he moved to Winona and taught at the Winona Public High School. Lyle was also a flight instructor and operated Sauer Aviation until his retirement following an accident in 1992. On July 8, 1995, he married Jean Dotseth at St. Jochim Catholic Church in Plainview. Lyle enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying, and traveling. He will be remembered as someone who loved company and was generous.

Lyle is survived by his siblings Wilfred Sauer, Marjorie (John) Knoll, Geraldine (Greg) Stefanich, and Catheryn (William) Gumeringer, as well as sisters-in-law Marilyn, Pearl, and Vera Sauer, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary Sauer, his wife Jean Sauer, his brothers Harold, Clarence, Earl, and Richard Sauer, sisters-in-law Sandy Sauer and Margo Sauer, and nephew Steven Sauer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Winona Volunteer Services Food Shelf or the donor’s choice.

The funeral services for Lyle C. Sauer are entrusted to Fawcett Junker Funeral Home & Crematory in Winona. The service will be livestreamed on their website, and condolences can be left at www.fawcett-junkerfuneralhome.com.
