India Set to Outstrip China as Oil Consumption Leader and Pioneer in Green Hydrogen: IEA Chief’s Latest Report

India will soon surpass China as the largest driver of global oil demand, according to a statement made by International Energy Agency (IEA) chief, Fatih Birol. This is primarily due to India’s swelling population, which has already surpassed China’s. While India’s transition from fossil fuels will inevitably lag behind other regions, the IEA highlights that India has an opportunity to become a world leader in green hydrogen production, primarily owing to the cheap electricity produced from renewable energy sources like solar. The nation has already made rapid strides in generating electricity from renewable sources, including solar and biofuels like ethanol from sugarcane and agricultural waste. Furthermore, India can use the cheap electricity it produces to split water, thereby producing green hydrogen, which can make India the lowest green hydrogen producer in the world. Birol emphasized that India cannot afford to miss the opportunity to be a leader in green hydrogen and can benefit from being at the center of global energy affairs because of the country’s huge demand and advancements in generating electricity from renewable sources.
