Israel-Hamas Conflict Pushes 96% of Gazans into Poverty, says UN Report
Gaza, Palestine: The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has had a devastating impact on the people of Gaza, with a staggering 96% of the population now living in poverty, according to a report by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). This marks a significant increase from the 45% poverty rate recorded in 2017-2018.
ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti emphasized the long-term effects of the conflict, stating that even if a ceasefire is achieved and humanitarian aid is allowed into Gaza, poverty and deprivation will continue to afflict a substantial portion of the population for years to come. In light of these dire circumstances, Dashti called upon the international community to take responsibility and ensure the continuous flow of critical humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
The UN official further stressed the need for a comprehensive recovery and sustainable development plan for Gaza, addressing not only immediate humanitarian needs but also the root causes of the recurring conflicts. Such a plan should align with a peace process that seeks to bring lasting stability to the region.
Since the outbreak of violence on October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli military targets and towns, followed by extensive Israeli strikes on Gaza, the casualties on both sides have been substantial. Official figures indicate that approximately 7,028 Palestinians in Gaza and at least 1,400 individuals in Israel have lost their lives as a result of this bloody conflict.
While the situation in Gaza remains grim, it is crucial for the international community to come together and provide the necessary support to alleviate the suffering endured by the people of Gaza. The urgency of this humanitarian crisis cannot be overstated, and concerted efforts are needed to ensure that adequate aid reaches those who need it the most.
As the world witnesses the devastating consequences of the Israel-Hamas conflict on the people of Gaza, it is a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustainable solutions and lasting peace in the region. The global community must unite in their commitment to not only address the immediate humanitarian needs, but also to address the underlying causes of the conflict, forging a path toward a better future for the people of Gaza and the wider region.
